It may initially seem like a great idea: take five of Creedence Clearwater Revival’s longer tracks, none of which has previously been repackaged, and issue them on an audiophile-quality disc for less than half of what such records usually cost. The only problem is that Creedence’s forte was the three-minute single; and while Chooglin’ deserves plaudits for sound quality, its focus on extended, relatively simplistic jams may leave the uninitiated wondering why anybody ever bothered with this group. For a compelling answer, see 1980’s spirited The Concert or, better yet, Chronicle, the definitive hits package.
