Though by no means a great album, the Steve Miller Band’s Abracadabra offers a quantum leap forward from last year’s Circle of Love. As usual, Miller hasn’t got much to say, but he compensates for lyrical platitudes on the new LP with seamless production, bright guitar work, and some of the catchiest hooks and melodies you’ll hear all year. More than a little bit of the credit should go to Miller’s new band, whose members wrote the bulk of the material, but the group’s namesake did personally pen enough of the high points to show that he’s still got the touch.
