Especially if they also care about the film medium in general, fans of the Beatles‘ witty first movie should find a lot to like in The Beatles in Richard Lester’s A Hard Day’s Night. Billed as a “pictorial record” of A Hard Day’s Night, the oversized volume boasts photo stills of every shot in the movie, plus the complete original script (some of which didn’t make it onto the screen). Also featured in the book, which J. Philip DiFranco edited, are an introduction and 1964 review by Village Voice critic Andrew Sarris; a brief essay by Walter Shenson, the film’s producer; and a rambling, variously obscure and illuminating interview with director Richard Lester.
