Music Review: Eddie Hinton’s ‘Very Extremely Dangerous’ Is Very Extremely Good

Very Extremely Dangerous by Eddie Hinton

Though Eddie Hinton has been lurking behind the scenes for years (mostly as a Muscle Shoals session guitarist), Very Extremely Dangerous is the first album he has recorded on his own. My only question is, “Why did he wait so long?” He is a good guitarist and an even better songwriter, but the main surprise here is his elastic, effusive vocal work. He puts his heart and soul into every song and the result leaves little doubt that he could become just as unforgettable as the similarly styled Otis Redding. If that sounds like excessive praise, listen to what Hinton does with material as diverse as his own laid-back “Get Off On It” and Redding’s rollicking “Shout Bamalama.”
