Music Review: The Stranglers’ ‘No More Heroes’

A sticker on DJ copies of this album warns that “this is great music, but it could offend.” The second half of that assertion proves more consistently true than the first. Like its predecessor, No More Heroes does profit from a multilayered, simultaneously harsh and airy instrumental landscape. But some of the songs are merely grating. And whereas the Sex Pistols seem fired by genuine concern over their country’s decline, the Stranglers appear eager only to make their most outrageous competitors look relatively genteel. That they do, with strident vocals and with lyrics that insult women. Proceed at your own risk.
