Music Review: Buffy Sainte-Marie’s ‘Native North American Child: An Odyssey’

Buffy Sainte-Marie's Native North American Child

Now that Buffy Sainte-Marie has split to MCA Records, her former Vanguard label is digging into the vaults for album material. The pickings must be sparse because the only two cuts here that were never previously released fill a combined total of three minutes and two seconds of playing time.

Still, if you don’t own any of the Vanguard albums from which the company culled the other tunes, this one makes a nice introduction to Sainte-Marie’s music. The focus is on the period when she was singing about her Cree Indian background and the songs include “Now That the Buffalo’s Gone,” “My Country Tis of Thy People You’re Dying” and the excellent “Soldier Blue.”
