Music Review: Tom Russell’s ‘Heart on a Sleeve’

Heart on a Sleeve (Remastered) by Tom Russell

Heart on a Sleeve is a 2012 reissue of Tom Russell’s auspicious 1984 solo debut album that features remastered sound and six previously unreleased bonus tracks. Songs like the title cut and “One and One” (both duets with Shawn Colvin) sound closer to traditional country than what Russell has since produced, but there’s plenty of evidence here of the vocal talent and songwriting skill that have powered his later classics. Indeed, the album includes early versions of several of them, including “Gallo del Cielo” and “St. Olav’s Gate.”
