Crystal Gayle lacks the gutsiness, innovation, and songwriting talents of big sister Loretta Lynn, but she has sizable talents of her own—like compelling, emotion-drenched vocals, a mostly good ear for material, and an ability to gracefully walk the line between country and pop. For evidence, see True Love, her ninth album, which mingles a few bits of fluff (“He Is Beautiful to Me”) with lots of hook-laden potential gold. Among the highlights: Reece Kirk’s “Our Love Is On the Faultline” and Rodney Crowell’s “Till I Gain Control Again,” the latter featuring harmony vocals by the composer.
