Music Review: ‘An Officer and a Gentleman’

An Officer and a Gentleman

An Officer and a Gentleman could be as big a hit with record buyers as it has been with moviegoers. True, many of the tracks have previously been released. The album also reveals several issues that have plagued other soundtracks—including a lack of cohesion in the absence of visual context. Still, the music is almost uniformly excellent. Among the high points: “Up Where We Belong,” where Joe Cocker, sounding better than he has in years, duets with Jennifer Warnes; Dire Straits‘s kinetic “Tunnel of Love”; and Sir Douglas Quintet’s sprightly “Be Real.”
