Artful Dodger blazes no new trails, but on Rave On, their latest album, the group follows traditional ones with style, grace, and sincerity. Though it doesn’t often tap sources as old as Buddy Holly’s “Rave On,” the LP title correctly suggests a reliance on vintage rock. Like the similarly styled and now-defunct Raspberries, Artful Dodger draws heavily on 60s pop-rock groups and comes up with music that sounds simultaneously fresh and familiar. The chief assets of this recommended disc include strong lead and harmony vocals, plus a facility for hooks and melodies.
