As large portions of this album demonstrate, the Spinners can breathe life into just about anything. Love Trippin’ contains a preponderance of throwaway love lyrics and equally cliched pop/soul melodies. But the Spinners’ intricately arranged, kinetic vocals—which feature soaring falsettos, superb bass, and everything in between—make even the most mundane music enjoyable. Moreover, there are a few good compositions here and, on those, the Spinners really shine. Try the synthesizer-spiced “Split Decision”; producer Michael Zager’s “Now That You’re Mine Again”; and a version of “Cupid” that proves faithful to the Sam Cooke original.
