If you like your rock served up with mellotrons, strings, and heavily produced vocals about the wonders of love, the Buzzcocks won’t buzz for you. But if you go for a manic pace (too fast for dancing, unless you tend to eat amphetamines by the bottle) and view the modern world through cynical eyes, step right up and get acquainted. A Different Kind of Tension, the latest set from the British group, isn’t quite as consistent as last year’s Singles Going Steady (a compilation of UK hits). However, you will find lots of snappy, well-hooked music on the new package, which includes a side-long examination of alienation and all sorts of smile-inducing examples of the Buzzcocks’ jaded stance.
