Bright, contemporary pop stylings wed a shuffle beat and imaginative, layered vocals in a debut that ranks the Selector among the most consummate forces in Britain’s current ska revival. Like too many of the new ska groups, this seven-member outfit does rely more on the genre than on an individual personality; and, without the political undercurrents that fueled early ska, that genre can seem pretty limited. As such, the songs here often appear as interchangeable as they are likable. But this is, after all, a first album; and though I’d recommend it only to those with a particular taste for ska, there’s enough talent and wit here to make me keep an ear open for LP number two.
