Music Review: Mickey Baker’s ‘Jazz-Rock Guitar’

Mickey Baker's Jazz-Rock Guitar

Veteran guitarist Mickey Baker—whose credits range from an excellent recent country blues LP to “Love Is Strange,” the 1957 rock hit he scored with musical partner Sylvia Robinson—seems to thrive on diversity. Witness Jazz-Rock Guitar, his latest package, which he made with the Alex Sanders Funk Time Band. It departs dramatically from his earlier offerings and embraces everything from disco to a Rachmaninoff prelude. Thanks mainly to Baker’s inventive jazz-rock guitar, which proves redolent of artists like Stanley Clarke and Larry Coryell, it all works like a charm.
