Listening to David Johansen‘s auspicious second solo album, I get the feeling that he has discovered a way to cash in without selling out. In Style retains the hard-rock, streetwise stance that characterized his leadership of the New York Dolls and his first solo album while also addressing all the issues that kept the Dolls from a mass audience. Attractively coproduced by the singer and Mick Ronson, the atypically melodic set finds Johansen successfully flirting with everything from orchestration to elements of reggae, disco, and Motown. it also finds him amidst pensive, accessible lyrics, snappy rock rhythms, and a preponderance of addictive hooks.
