As Dusty Springfield fans like me know all too well, her albums appear sporadically (to say the least) and contain uneven programs. It Begins Again, her first LP in four years, is no exception. Her sweet, resonant soprano has never been in better shape, except perhaps on the classic Dusty in Memphis. But most of the new material, from writers like Barry Manilow and Peter Allen, lends itself to syrupy sentiment rather than to the earthy sensuality that best suits her. Though producer Roy Thomas Baker (Queen, etc.) seems like a potentially good studio mate for Dusty, moreover, his work is cluttered and largely ill-conceived. There are moments here but not enough of them.
