Music Review: Robert Gordon Wraps Up a ‘Fresh Fish Special’

Robert Gordon--Fresh Fish Special

On Fresh Fish Special, his second solo album, former punk rocker Robert Gordon again joins forces with semi-legendary fifties guitarist Link Wray as well as producer Richard Gottehrer and ex–Bob Dylan cohorts Rob Stoner and Howie Wyeth. In addition, the new LP features backup vocals by Elvis Presley’s Jordanaires and a piano guest spot by Bruce Springsteen, who wrote “Fire,” the side-one closer. Not many artists could make sense (not to mention music) out of such a motley crew, but Gordon pulls it off. If you like Presley’s Sun sides—or rockabilly in general—you’re bound to love his LP’s affectionate, wonderfully anachronistic renditions of tunes like “The Way I Walk” (by Jack Scott), “Sea Cruise” (Huey Smith), and “I Want to Be Free” (Leiber and Stoller).
