To a large extent, Eddie Kendricks‘ At His Best—an anthology from the high-voiced former lead singer with the Temptations—belies its own title. Dominated by catchy but simplistic solo work (e.g., “Keep On Truckin’,” “Boogie Down”), it makes good sense on the dance floor but seems certain to bore many sit-down listeners. The ethereal “Just My Imagination (Running Away with Me),” the only Tempts track here, is another story entirely, though. It rates among the best soul-pop efforts of the decade by any artist and it vividly demonstrates what more imaginative material and backup could do for Kendricks’s present career.
