Most of Rod Stewart‘s new Foot Loose & Fancy Free disappoints, but the violin-spiced, extremely emotive “You’re in My Heart” and the equally touching “I Was Only Joking” should be enough to keep fans hopeful. Not surprisingly, both are ballads; and the superb former track is the only one here that he authored on his own. Stewart can interpret effectively, and he can most certainly rock. But his present band and arrangements leave much to be desired. And it’s been years since he has tackled a rocker with the appeal of a “Maggie May” or an “Every Picture Tells a Story.”
