The only reason why this late 1975 release didn’t make my top-10-of-the-year list is that I didn’t hear it in time. A consistently inspired two-LP live recording, The Koln Concert offers by far the best showcase to date for solo jazz pianist Keith Jarrett‘s improvisatory inventions. If I had to pick a favorite track, it would be the dynamic, lyrical masterwork that occupies the first side; but the gossamer piece that fills the remainder of the album is also not to be missed.
