Music Review: Keith Jarrett’s ‘Koln Concert’

Keith Jarrett's Köln Concert

The only reason this late 1975 release didn’t make my top-10-of-the-year list is that I didn’t hear it in time. A consistently inspired two-LP live recording, The Koln Concert offers by far the best showcase to date for solo jazz pianist Keith Jarrett’s improvisatory inventions. If I had to pick a favorite track, it would be the dynamic, lyrical masterwork that occupies the first side, but the gossamer piece that fills the remainder of the album is also not to be missed.
