Music Review: Bob Dylan’s ‘Dylan’ Is a Ripoff

Dylan

Columbia Records apparently threw together this collection of nine interpretations of other writers’ material to cash in on Bob Dylan’s final contractual obligation to the label. Culled from outtakes and other assorted fooling-around-in-the-studio tapes, the recordings were never intended for release by Dylan, and it’s easy to see why. Characterized by off-key playing and singing, halfhearted vocals, dull production, and uninspired backup (no wonder the accompanists aren’t credited), this album is wholly unrepresentative of Dylan’s talent and a ripoff for record buyers.
