Music Review: Kiss’s ‘Double Platinum’

Kiss--Double Platinum

Thanks to hooks, histrionics, and a whole lot of hype, Kiss has probably gone further with less talent than just about any other contemporary rock group. Be that as it may, the new retrospective compilation called Double Platinum offers four sides of the boom-boom heavy metal that you’ve probably already come to love or hate. Fans should find the set indispensable since it contains merciless guitar-and-vocal assaults like the popular “Beth” and “Detroit Rock City.” The rest of us, however, may deem such clamorous material less to the point than the enclosed “Kiss Special Merchandise” flyer. Buy one of each advertised item (everything from a necklace to a “tour hat”) and, according to my calculator, you’ll be out a cool $79. To borrow a cliche, as Kiss itself frequently does, these guys are laughing all the way to the bank.
