With Purple Crush, Alexander Harvey (who should not be confused with the Sensational Alex Harvey) takes a big step forward from both commercial and artistic standpoints. The love songs that fill the program may seem trite on paper, but if there’s an old-fashioned romantic anywhere inside you, Harvey’s aching vocals and expansive, sax-spiced arrangements will make you believe every line. This is no classic, but it fits well with wine, candlelight, and the ballads of Rod Stewart.
